LNP candidate reveals secret plans to make abortion a crime in QLD

Freya Ostapovitch, the LNP candidate for Stretton, will be pushing for a conscience vote on abortion after the 2024 Queensland State Election.

A recent Guardian article revealed audio of Freya Ostapovitch, the LNP candidate for Stretton, telling a voter that although she is "pro-life," she must stay silent about her true position until after the election. Ostapovitch even repeated discredited medical claims linking abortion to breast cancer.

Despite LNP leader David Crisafulli offering public assurances that abortion laws won’t change under his potential government, concerns are growing. Crisafulli claims his team supports his position, but he is also refusing to rule out a conscience vote, which could allow his LNP MPs to vote for a Katter Party bill on repealing the decriminalisation of abortion rights in Queensland.

This is not Ostapovitch’s first time pushing anti-abortion rhetoric. During a previous stint as an MP, she argued in Parliament that abortion removes so-called “protective factors” against cancer. This statement has been debunked by experts and dismissed as misinformation, yet it resurfaces in her recent conversations with voters.

Beware of Promises Made in the Dark

The recent comments from Freya Ostapovitch serve as a stark reminder that unfortunately the fight for reproductive rights is far from over. Her remarks expose a truly troubling scenario for the women of Queensland: downplaying the LNP's true intentions until after the election. This "trust me" approach suggesting that once in power, there will be an attempt to roll back hard-won reproductive rights.

This raises an important question: If the LNP truly supports the current abortion laws, why won't David Crisafulli rule out a conscience vote and make it clear that reproductive rights will not change?

It’s not just about Ostapovitch. The LNP’s track record speaks volumes. When abortion was legalized in 2018, the overwhelming majority of LNP MPs voted against it. The idea that they’ve suddenly had a change of heart is not only unrealistic—it’s dangerous. With the possibility of a Katters' Australian Party bill on abortion looming, every Queenslander needs to ask: Can we trust a party that has consistently fought against reproductive rights?

The Stakes Are Too High to Stay Silent

The takeaway from this development is clear: Queenslanders cannot afford to be complacent when it comes to reproductive rights. We’ve fought too hard to secure the right to choose—and there are forces working in the shadows to take that right away. It is essential to hold candidates accountable for their words and actions, not just before the election but after the votes are counted.

Ostapovitch’s comments, combined with Crisafulli’s vague assurances, reveal a coordinated attempt to undermine reproductive freedom in Queensland. We must continue to be vocal, ensuring that our hard-won rights are protected, no matter who sits in Parliament.
